Ashland – On friday June 12th, the MetroWest YMCA hosted the ground breaking ceremony for the Hoyt Family Regional YMCA along Memorial Drive in Ashland. This marks the beginning of phase one of the construction of the Early Childhood Learning Center and significant site work on the property.

In attendance were U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and State Sen. President Karen Spilka, State Representatives: Jack Lewis, David Linsky and James Arena-DeRosa. Also in attendance were Ashland Select Board Members Yolanda Greaves and Claudia Bennett. MetroWest YMCA staff members, Team Hoyt, donors, members of the YMCA Board and several people who have worked tirelessly to get to this point also celebrated the occasion.

The early learning center is expected to serve more than 100 children and families starting in September 2027.
Town Manager Michael Herbert gave the best summary of the importance: “This is a moment a decade in the making, and a milestone for Ashland and our neighbors across MetroWest. What rises from this site over the next two years will be more than a building. It will be the physical expression of what becomes possible when partners work together over the long haul.
The site itself tells a story of creative public work. The Rail Transit District is 161 acres assembled from three separate parcels, originally zoned for as many as 500 more housing units. Converting that land into what it is today; a regional YMCA, more than 120 acres of preserved open space with Trolley Brook Trail , and a measured plan for age restricted transit-oriented development…took a two-year, four-party negotiation among the Town, private parties, and the MetroWest YMCA. There was no template for the deal. It was built piece by piece, with every party giving something and getting something, and with the final structure designed so the public benefit would hold up over time.

A project of this scale only happens with partners at every level. Our federal delegation; Congressman Jim McGovern, Senator Ed Markey, and Senator Elizabeth Warren…has been a steady source of support for federal coordination on regional infrastructure. Senate President Karen Spilka has advocated for this region for over two decades. And the Select Board and Town Meeting voters that said yes when the ask was complicated.
The Y rising on this site will serve far more than Ashland. Families from Framingham, Hopkinton, Holliston, Sherborn, Southborough, and the surrounding communities have needed an Early Learning facility like this one for a long time. That regional reach is the point. The asset belongs here, but it works because it works for everyone within driving distance. The Trolley Brook Trail already connects this site to downtown Ashland. With the Y as its destination, that connection becomes something residents will use every day.

Groundbreakings are easy to read as endings; the planning is over, the work begins. The real version is that they are transitions. The next chapter belongs to the YMCA, the donors who support it, the contractors and tradespeople who will build it, and to the families who will eventually walk through the doors. Ashland’s role now shifts to support and stewardship; making sure the surrounding development, the trail connections, and the regional access all live up to the promise of what was started here in 2018. We are proud to be part of this story, and grateful to everyone who helped get it to today.”
